OVERVIEW:

In collaboration with Director of Bands, Dr. Jeffrey Boeckman, and Graduate Assistant, Pablo Furukawa, I designed the cover art for Hawaiʻi Chorales for Band, a free educational songbook created by the UH Bands. The collection features foundational musical exercises rooted in Hawaiʻi’s rich cultural and historical musical traditions, with arrangements for all instruments at a level accessible to young musicians and educators. INSPIRATION:

As the first series of chorales centers on the music of Queen Liliʻuokalani, I drew inspiration from her iconic butterfly brooch—often seen in her portraits—as well as ornamental details from her diamond star tiara. The identity was designed as a flexible visual system that can be adapted and reinterpreted for future chorale series and themes.
Pictured above is Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaiʻi’s last reigning monarch, as well as a passionate advocate for the arts and an accomplished composer and musician. She composed over 150 mele (songs), including some of the most beloved and enduring Hawaiian compositions.

Below are images of Queen Liliʻuokalani’s diamond star tiara and butterfly brooch, which served as key visual inspirations for the motifs used throughout the songbook design.
Ten individual songbook covers were designed, each customized for its corresponding instrument(s)
